10 TIPS FOR TEACHING YOUR FIRST COLLEGE CLASS - HIGHER ED PROFESSOR
...
Estimated Reading Time 8 mins
- Talk to your colleagues. One of the best sources of information to help you prepare is talking to other faculty in your department. If you’re an adjunct, talk to the department chair or program director that hired you.
- Ask for copies of old syllabi. When you’re talking with colleagues, ask for copies of syllabi from previous versions of the course as well as an example from other courses.
- Let your course goals drive your content. As you begin thinking through your class, you want to develop course goals. These goals will then drive the content that gets included in your course.
- Less is more. The biggest mistake that I see when teaching a college class for the first time is trying to include too much material. I believe this probably occurs for a couple of reasons.
- Design assignments that are rigorous, but reasonable. I believe in pushing students and sometimes pushing them beyond what they think they can accomplish.

- Create a Student Avatar. “Instructors have to know who they’re teaching,” Eng says. “And I don’t mean basic information like My students want to go into business or My students want to go into journalism.
- Use Tent Cards to Remember Names. Building supportive relationships with students has far-reaching effects on their engagement in class. One way to help this along is to learn students’ names.
- Implement “Cold Calling” and “No Opt Out” Lack of student participation is a common complaint among college instructors. To address this, Eng uses two strategies from Doug Lemov’s book, Teach Like a Champion: Cold Calling and No Opt Out.
- Deploy the QQC Strategy for Readings. Students not doing the required reading? Eng addresses this problem with something he calls the Questions, Quotations, and Comments Strategy (QQC).
- Put the Lecture at the End. A typical college class starts with some kind of lecture, and maybe after that, the students will be invited to discuss or apply the concepts being taught.
