How to Build a Workout Program

How to Build a Workout Program

How to build a workout program covers the necessary steps to develop a scholastically-supported workout plan. By scholastic, we mean legitimate or empirical. Simply stated, there is existing evidence to support the program being built. At the surface, this is an intimidating task that sends most to opt for professional workout program design.

As experts in the fields of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, as well as strength and conditioning, we teach you how to build an outstanding program that will yield results, if followed consistently. When adaptations are made and a plateau ensues, these lessons can be applied again to ensure the construction of a new legitimate workout program.

In the first lesson, we introduce Dan Miller, Ed.S., C.S.C.S. with his academic and professional experience. Immediately the concept of specificity is introduced and discussed. Specificity, pertaining to strength and conditioning, may be defined as utilizing training to elicit an intended performance enhancement.

In the second lesson, we discuss the topic of goal setting. This is an often skipped step that is critical to the outcomes of a successful workout program. One must verify that if multiple goals exist, the goals do not conflict.

In the third lesson, we show how easy research can be. Scholastic research is necessary to ensure that the program being designed has been studied and tested by trained professionals. At the least, scholastic research provides the necessary evidence to design a new program based on laboratory observations and data collected empirically.

In the fourth lesson, we take what has been identified as scholastic and begin building a workout program. A spreadsheet is provided as a template for future use and mirrors the spreadsheet used in the lesson. Each student of this class has our permission to use the spreadsheet for their own benefit, as it relates to exercise and fitness. Students from this class do not have our permission to share this spreadsheet template.

Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to create legitimate workout programs with ease and minimal stress.
