Suicide Prevention Training For Educators and Parents by NVR
Suicide Prevention Training For Educators and Parents by NVR
New Authority Concept: watchful care and non-violent resistance
This is a course for suicide prevention that is probably the only extant program to offer not only ways to reduce suicide and suicide threats in youngsters but also to help parents (and other responsible adults) to cope with suicide threats that are taking place in the context of a clash between them and children.
Here you’ll learn proven tools of Psychology that every parent and teacher should know. Knowledge about what is familiar to the vast majority of suicidal or suicide-threatening kids. The central characteristic of both is that they suffer from interpersonal isolation and mental constriction. The two tasks seem deeply different at first sight, as the depressed or despairing suicidal child seems very different from the child that voices loud threats as a way of intimidating the parents. The commonalities however are deep, allowing for the development of a unified program.
The NVR approach aims at penetrating the mental and interpersonal “bubbles” so as to gradually widen them, thus countering suicide risk. The NVR approach is based on the assumption that there are also positive voices in the “parliament of the child’s mind”. Our goal is to contact and strengthen those voices, thus reducing the power of the voices of death.
By the end of this course, you will have:
Necessary of Validation “I feel that you’re in deep suffering and that it brings you to despair!”;
The basic skill of "Support and resistance";
Widening the network and increasing connectedness between parents, supporters, and children;
De-escalation and improving the quality of the parent-child interaction
Knowledge of how to use "Vigilant care";
Stopping damaging services with which children and adolescents come into contact;
Opening new options to prevent suicidal thoughts.
The rewards of parenting are great, but the work can be hard. Raising children is not easy; they come into this world helpless and need our care like never before - emotionally or physically! They make demands on us that often feel impossible to meet-but with patience, you will see your kids grow up to be happy adults who contribute positively to society.
Who Am I?
My name is Prof. Haim Omer and I have developed non-violent resistance (NVR) as a strategy for communities, families, and schools. Currently, I am a professor at the School of Psychological Sciences at Tel Aviv University.
I am a professional writer and educator who has spent the past 15+ years developing concepts and techniques for advancing parental and teacher authority in the setting of a more democratic society. My books "The New Authority: Family School and Community" and "Non-violent Resistance: A New Approach to Violent and Self-Destructive Children" discuss most of these concepts in detail.
My research focuses on parent education for parents of violent and self-destructive kids and teens, parent teaching for parents of children and adolescents with mental illnesses, supporting parents of adult kids who exhibit a pattern of "entitled dependence," and the creation of school-centered and community-centered interventions for the prevention of youth violence and self-risk behaviors.
I created the Non-Violent Resistance and The New Authority models for use in communities, families, and educational settings. The model's primary goal is to support parents and educators using wholly non-violent and non-escalating approaches. The method and its applications with parents of kids with externalizing disorders, anxiety disorders, juvenile delinquency, teen drivers, violence against siblings, prevention of computer and smartphone abuse, child-to-parent violence, foster parents, and school refusal have been the subject of numerous studies I've published.
Here's what we will do:
The course is about improving how you communicate with your children. I will present a model that helps teach communication in ways that strengthen and are rather positive than weakening or harmful to them, as well as relationships between parents/children alike! The remaining lessons cover specific strategies for using these skills:
how to involve supporters and help them relay positive messages to the suicidal or suicide-threatening youth;
how to guide parents in delivering an announcement on their decision to fight for their child's life;
how a professional or para-professional supporter can be involved, and which supportive messages can he/she relay to the suicidal youth, even if the youth does not answer;
why supporters are absolutely necessary;
how to orient the supporters in fulfilling tasks and relaying messages to the suicidal youth;
how to create a dramatic critical intervention (bringing in supplicants for the child’s life) that is often the absolute game-changer in situations of high suicide risk;
how to help parents or other responsible adults defuse and de-escalate the interaction;
reduce damaging services that increase suicide risk in the long run;
absorb some of those principles in your usual way of working, even if you are not an NVR therapist.
You will not only learn how to improve your parenting by taking this course but also have the tools and skills necessary for long-term success. The content is practical with plenty of examples that demonstrate what needs to be done when certain events occur in our homes - all taught through a user-friendly format!
