An Introduction to Geology Using Pokémon

An Introduction to Geology Using Pokémon

This course is meant to be a very basic introduction to geology. While it is not meant to be a comprehensive overview of geology, it's an excellent introduction to the rock cycle, minerals, and plate tectonics. All of these topics are framed in the context of Pokemon and their relationship to these geology concepts.

Part 1 (16 minute recording)

In this recording, we'll discuss the layers of the earth - the outer core, inner core, mantle, and crust. We'll talk about one little-known Pokemon that might have been modeled after a diagram of Earth's layers. Next, we'll talk about what plate tectonics is, and how Groudon may be the "plate tectonics Pokemon." We will also briefly discuss the three different types of plate boundaries - convergent, divergent, and transform

Part 2 (19 minute recording)

This part focuses on igneous rocks. We'll compare the two different types of igneous rocks (intrusive and extrusive) and discuss which Pokemon might have been inspired by each type. We'll also go over volcano classification and the Pokemon that are inspired by these volcanoes. Finally, we'll talk about how crystals and gemstones are formed in igneous rocks.

Part 3 (11 minute recording)

This section briefly covers metamorphic rocks (they aren't featured too much in Pokemon). Then we'll turn our attention to sedimentary rocks. We'll discuss how sedimentary rocks are classified by grain size. We'll explore how scientists can tell where a rock (or piece of rock) originated. And we will go over the rock cycle in its entirety.

Part 4 (18 minute recording)

What are minerals and how are they different from rocks? What Pokemon are inspired by minerals? Are there any other minerals that would make great Pokemon? We'll answer these questions in the final recording.

This basic introduction to geology compares popular the Pokemon anime to real-life geology concepts.
