Shear force and Bending Moment

Shear force and Bending Moment

This course will deeply take the concepts of Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram and also various applications of drawing SFD and BMD. The subject will start from very scratch to a very advanced level. All types of numerical examples, beginner to expert level will be taken. The course will be very much useful for all the students who are appearing either for their semester exam or for their competitive exam.

Each lecture is developed and delivered with the benefit of my experience as a university lecturer in structural engineering. The teaching style appeals to all types of learners with material developed through hand-drawn notes and sketches. Students are encouraged to engage with each lecture by actively developing their own notes during each video lecture…no ‘death by PowerPoint’ here! We'll focus on pinning down the basics before diving into worked examples.

What shear force and bending moment?

The shear is found out by subtracting the load to the left of the section from the left upward reaction. The internal bending moment M resists the moment caused by the re-action on the left less the moment caused by the forces to the left of the same section.
The objective of this course is to discuss the fundamental concepts of analysis of beams(single span or multispans) and portal frames(subjected to gravity and lateral loads) and obtain bending moment and shear force diagram. The idea is to understand how to obtain bending moment and shear force diagrams for various types of structures and loading seen in real life. The course also covers the impact of flexibility/deformation of supports on the bending moment and shear force diagrams of statically indeterminate beams. The concept of influence line diagrams has been discussed as well, which is a very vital aspect of structural analysis to be able to figure out the worst-case loading scenarios that would result in the highest bending moment and shear force demand at a particular location. This information is typically used to design real-life structures. The concept of approximate analysis of frames subject to gravity and lateral load has also been discussed which helps in estimating the rough order of magnitude of bending moment and shear force that the member would see in the structural members without getting into a 3-dimensional analysis. The course has been designed such that it helps fresh graduates out of college to prepare for job interviews in the field of structural engineering wherein, understanding of concepts of bending moment and shear force diagrams is critical.
