Phonics Learn to read - By a Qualified UK teacher: Part 2

What will we learn?

  • Phonics sounds;  j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, oa, oo, ar, or, igh, ur

  • The Phonics sound's actions and songs

  • How to Read and write decodable words and simple sentences.

  • Tricky Words/common sight words.

Here are the learning materials that you can use throughout this course.

  • The flashcards will be used when we introduce 'decodable' words (words you can 'sound out using phonics sounds), tricky words and reading captions. Set 1 is named, Week 1, Set 2 is named, week 2 and so on.

  • The Letter Sounds Booklet will be used each time we introduce a new letter sound. You can either print this and make it into a book, or just print one page at a time.

  • The Tricky Words Booklet will be used each time we introduce a new set of words. You can either print this and make it into a book, or just print one page at a time.

*There are some extra sounds and words in these book that are not included in this course.

  • The Mark Making Book, I refer to this throughout the course. This is simply an A4 sized notebook with. either wide lines or squares for students to practice their writing in. As in this course the students are taught to develop their guided and independent writing skills. This is an important aspect of the course so try to have a notebook ready.

Notes from Teacher Tricia:

  1. It is important to go at a speed with suits your age and development. Don't move onto a new letter sound until you can identify it when they see it and make the action. This will ensure that you are ready for more.

  2. After the videos keep practicing using your flashcards at home. (You can laminate these to help them last longer).

  3. When you read bedtime stories, have fun pointing out the letters and words that we have learned.

  4. Stick/pin your flashcards on display where you can look back at them regularly so they don't forget and can develop more fluency. (Near the kitchen table is a good spot).

  5. Most importantly: Keep it fun :-) Give lots of praise and celebrate success when you've learned something new.

Fun and interactive videos, free workbooks, phonics is taught through clear instruction and fun songs and actions.
