Research has shown that reading to children on a regular basis helps to increase their reading levels and cognitive ability. Good reading skills are essential for children to do well in school.  And there are so many things that you can do as a parent to help children become good readers.  In this course, you will learn how to teach reading skills using a children's storybook.  You probably already read to your child at home.  Now you can learn how to incorporate simple yet effective lessons in phonological awareness, word recognition, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Storytime is the perfect time to work on your child's reading in a simple yet effective way.

Working on reading skills for just a few minutes a day can have a major impact on your child's reading abilities.  This course is designed to help you create reading activities and lessons at each stage of the reading process; before, during, and after.  Each stage of reading offers opportunities for you to engage children in the story, teach critical thinking skills, increase their knowledge of words, and how to respond to what they have just read. 

In this course, you will learn the basic elements of reading instruction: phonological awareness and phonics, word identification and vocabulary, and comprehension skills. You will learn how to teach word identification skills, incorporate phonics and phonemic awareness, how to facilitate critical thinking and discussion skills, which will help to improve communication and reading skills.
