Draw a Wolf's Head With Pastel Pencils

Draw a Wolf's Head With Pastel Pencils

This is a big course, over 5 hours long. I intended doing the video lesson of the wolf with pastel pencils and including a couple of short demos on soft pastels, but gradually I added more content so that there are full sections on pastels altogether and two complete videos on painting sunrise skies with Terry Ludwig pastels. So all in all you have three full lessons with the main feature being the Wolf's head.

I drew this from a photograph taken by a friend of our gallery, Peter Haygarth who is a top wildlife photographer. The actual drawing/painting took me just over three hours so I have broken it down into smaller segments so that you can take a break when you need to. The main thing you need is to have sharp pencils, especially when you come to the fine hairs. The best way to draw these is to use the pencil upright and just lightly flick over the surface of the paper. Try and draw lines by pressing on slowly will make your details too thick.

The sunrises are from the Northumberland coastline in North East England where I live. They are produced on a black surface which has a sandpaper feel to it. This means the paper will hold a lot of chalk before it becomes impossible to add more colour. In parts the black of the paper shows through but this adds to the finish rather than it being a smooth painting.

Enjoy these three pastels and let me know how you get on,

Eric
