Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a very  complex developmental disorder that manifests as  persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviours. The effects of being on the spectrum and  the severity of symptoms are different in each child or adult diagnosed.

Autism  is usually first diagnosed in early childhood with many of the most-obvious signs presenting around 2-3 years old, but some children with autism develop the same as neurotypical children until aged 2 years when they may  lose previously gained skills. Research has shown that one in 59 children is estimated to have autism. Autistic spectrum disorder is also  more common in boys than in girls, and many girls with ASD exhibit less obvious signs compared to boys. The condition is lifelong. However, many children diagnosed with ASD go on to live independent, productive, and fulfilling lives.
