ETHICS

To ensure that participants are aware of the relationship between ethical conduct and business practices and that they know the ethical theories, standards and practices as it relates to the general conduct of business and their interaction with employees, customers and the public at large.

Specifically, the course aims to:

  • Establish a clear understanding of what ethics is

  • Foster an understanding of ethical responsibilities in society

  • Improve or establish individual and group skills in identifying and analyzing ethical issues in business and formulating recommended solutions that may resolve ethical conflicts and dilemmas

  • Critically examine the assumptions and values that people of diverse backgrounds bring to the complex world of business

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successfully completing this course participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of studying Ethics

  • Outline the main theories of ethics

  • Compare and contrast the main theories of ethics

  • Identify the ethical rights and duties of employees within a firm

  • Write about employee crime

  • Discuss employee whistle-blowing

  • Discuss the ethical responsibility of employees in protecting trade secrets

  • Explain the issues surrounding employee privacy in the workplace

  • Identify the rights of workers in a merger and acquisition

  • Outline the responsibilities of shareholders in a merger and acquisition

  • Explain the ethical issues that arise from discrimination at the workplace

  • Discuss how ethical dilemmas can be handled at work

  • Outline the ethical issues that arise in advertising

  • Identify the role of product safety in marketing

  • Compare and contrast personal and organizational values

  • Explain corporate social responsibility

  • Describe corporate espionage

  • Discuss the role of ethics in international business

  • Identify the criticisms of marketing’s impact on society as a whole

  • Discuss the role of ethics in marketing decision-making

  • Discuss business ethics in the Jamaican context
