Drawing 1.01 with Dan Freeman of ArtClassBrooklyn is a basic academic art class that starts off with the basics of drawing the human figure, and advances into studies of How to draw the human head and face to achieve a likeness in portraiture.

In this course, All of the basics of beginner-level human figure drawing are included: Contour, Gesture, Tone, Proportion, Form, Light, Perspective, Foreshortening and Moving Figures are all covered through enlightening lectures and slideshows with photographic reference materials. Technical video demonstrations are included in every lesson to show in detail exactly how a successful drawing is done step by step as the student gradually learns the construction of the human form and how to draw it.

At this point the focus shifts, taking the skills the student has thus far learned of how to draw the human figure and using these to draw the human face and all of it’s parts. Each part of the face: eyes, nose, lips, ears and hair is examined and described in great anatomical detail. All-important facial proportionality is covered and combined with a thorough understanding of exactly where to put facial features. Putting it all together with lots of practice and dedication makes for a highly accurate portrait drawing.

Minimal art materials are required: 2H, H, F, HB, 2B, and 4B Pencils, Kneaded eraser, hand pencil sharpener and ruler; along with Newsprint and sketchpads are all that the student needs to buy to work along with this class successfully.

Artist/Professor Dan Freeman is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts, and studied at Tyler School of Art, Queens College, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and has taught at CUNY and the New York Institute of Technology. His paintings and works on paper are in many collections, public and private, throughout the world.
