History of Systematic Theology: Early Church Period


During the early church period, theologians battled against heresies including iconoclasm, gnosticism, doceticism, and arianism. This battle prompted a spiritual transformation in the lives of many leading up to the creation of biblical creeds as well as the compilation of theological works. Some of the doctrines theologians defended using the Scriptures include the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, the Trinity, the deity of Christ, and so forth.

This course is designed to enhance the student's knowledge and understanding of the history of systematic theology during the early church period. This course will address the life and theology of 7 theologians including: (1) John of Damascus, (2) Ignatius of Alexandria, (3) Clement of Alexandria, (4) Origen of Alexandria, (5) Athanasius of Alexandria, (6) Gregory of Nyssa, and (7) Cyril of Alexander. 

At the end of this course, students will have learned terms such as the Trinity, incarnation, omnipotence, allegory, and so forth. The students will also be able to learn valuable lessons as well as gain spiritual application that pertains to the importance of the theologians that are discussed in this course.
