Play Gypsy Jazz Rhythm Guitar! Vol 3 - Waltz Accompaniment

Play Gypsy Jazz Rhythm Guitar! Vol 3 - Waltz Accompaniment

In this course we will go further into the Gypsy Jazz waltz guitar style that we learned in my Introduction to Gypsy Jazz Guitar Course.

Gypsy Jazz waltz guitar has it's roots in the Bal-Musette style of French dance music that dates back to the 1880s. Django Reinhardt- the greatest guitarist of the 20th century and the father of Gypsy Jazz, cut his teeth playing Bal-Musette in the 1920's. The valse (waltz) style of musette was one of the most popular styles of the time.

We will learn the chords for Montagne Sainte-Genevieve, a famous valse that was attributed to Django. I will show you two different arrangements for this landmark composition.

This course also explores two Valses from the Dutch style of Gypsy Jazz, Valse a Rosenthal and Valse de Wasso. Both of these valses were composed by the master Gypsy Jazz guitarist Wasso Grunholz. I will show you how to play the arrangements for these pieces by drawing inspiration from the versions of The Rosenberg Trio, and Jimmy Rosenberg.

We will get into the details of how and when to play Folk versus more Jazzy arrangements. We will also explore how to approach walking baselines in concert with chord progressions and discuss how to create tension in the music by switching up the feel from the typical 3/4 waltz feel to the 6/8 rhumba style.

This course will provide you with many variations and inversions of chord shapes and fingerings that often get used within the Gypsy Jazz genre. We will talk about these chords as they appear up and down the neck as well as how to efficiently get around open string chords.

If you are looking to expand your accompaniment skills on guitar, want to increase your knowledge of chord shapes and rhythm guitar arrangement, this course will provide you with a solid foundation. You can also take what we will learn here and it apply it to many different genres of guitar playing. Bolster your own creativity by using this course as an inspiration for your own compositions as well.
