Life threatening conditions mean listen to your OFFICIAL SOURCES and Local Officials for life threatening decisions!

When a tropical storm or hurricane pops us there can be an overwhelming amount of information from the media, amateur forecasters or wishcasters and others. These messages can become conflicting and confusing for us all.

But if you break it down into these general steps, much of the anxiety may be reduced.

  1. Make a plan, plans include an assessment of where you live and how secure is your home. If you plan to leave, have a go bag so you can grab and go. Deciding on as many of these things in advance lowers your anxiety.

  2. Protect your home from strong wind entering it. Details inside.

  3. Plans should include your on-hand food and water as well. Include pets in your plans. The class discusses how much and how you can collect food supplies at almost no additional expense. (BOGO is your friend).

  4. Should you evacuate? If you decide to evacuate, you should decide on a fixed number of days BEFORE the arrival of tropical storm force winds at your location. The NHC has a forecast for wind arrival on their website. Consider traffic congestion and where you will go. If you think a shelter will work it will, but you will be cramped, and have to bring your food and bedding and have a small amount of area to stay in. A better choice is friends or relatives in sturdy housing outside the forecast path if possible.

  5. The aftermath. Even if you get zero hurricane damage, a tree limb may take out power for some time. Driving is dangerous and another reason to have what you need and be where you are safe for 3-5 days.

NOTE: This body of work is general information that should not be used for life or death decisions! It is your responsibility to research federal, state and local laws that apply to your specific situation. This course teaches HOW to find information applicable to you.
