Pokémon Science: Ultra Beasts and Invasive Species
Pokémon Science: Ultra Beasts and Invasive Species
This class explores the connection between the famous Ultra Beasts from the Pokemon anime world, and the invasive species they might have been modeled after. We'll also cover other possible inspirations from science, mythology, and culture.
Shigeru Ohmori, the planning director for Sun and Moon, has said that the Ultra Beasts (featured in Pokemon Sun and Moon) are inspired by Invasive Species. In this flex class, we'll explore which invasive species each Ultra Beast might be inspired by, citing similarities and differences. Along the way, we'll learn about how invasive species spread, and the impact that invasive species can have on their new environment. Although this class's emphasis is on invasive species, we will briefly cover some other possible inspirations for each Ultra Beast, too.
Students will watch four short recorded lectures (each 10 to 15 minutes long) and have access to some extension activities that will deepen their understanding of the topic, facilitate discussion with the teacher on the course page, and allow learners to demonstrate their understanding. Students can also participate in the creation of a Pokemon based on an invasive species.
